Written on Conflicting Gun Positions Leave Park-Goers in the Dark:

I think we should just build a whole bunch of gun parks. That way all the people who are too scared to go into our parks or greenways without packing heat would feel safe. We could hold quick draw contests, maybe let the NRA sponsor duels between political candidates. Good grief.

Written on Burchett’s Choice:

I have a question, not just about Burchett, but Metropulse in general. Since the Knoxville Sentinel bought Metropulse, it appears to be more of an events calendar than a forum for opinions that are somewhat different from the Sentinel. I find this VERY disturbing, and not at all in keeping with what an alternative news outlet is supposed to be. It is becoming clear to many of us that the only alternative news source left in Tennessee is the Nashville Scene. The Sentinel, and whoever is now controlling the editorial content of the equally pitiful version in Chattanooga, are obviously controlled by major news corporations, dependent upon advertising dollars, with no regard for citizens' need for accurate, thoughtful information that is not controlled by advertisers. I miss the old Metropulse. but will move on to a reliable source of unbiased news, like so many others. Have a nice day.

Written on Keep Tennessee's Upper Courts Free of Politics:

Ron Ramsey is full of it. Tennessee has a system to select judges that works. The only problem Ramsey has with it is that it is not politicized enough to suit him and he cannot control it. But this is not at all different from the nut cases who want counties to elect school directors, rather than hire qualified people. Think of it, if Ramsey has his way, school directors and judges will have to spend a large percentage of their time raising money for campaigns, not to mention finding ways to hire unemployable hacks from powerful families to gain votes. Typical Ramsey. Should be a lesson for all of us when it comes to the governor's race. Keep Ron Ramsey out of the Governo's Mansion for goodness sakes. He has proven that he is an old time polical hack with no concern for Tennesseans, only for underhanded ways he can build a political base. Makes me shiver to think of it.

Written on Gun Crazy:

Gosh, I am so thankful the Tn Legislature is making sure I can carry a gun to defend myself in a bar or restaurant. I can't tell you how many times I've been scared out of my wits by hostesses and busboys, not to mention that 70-year old waitress who is working to help pay for her medical bills. And despite my gratitude for their concern for my well being (I know it has nothing to do with donations from the NRA) I really wish my state representatives would let me carry an AK-47 into one of their hearings so I can defend my right to buy a bottle of wine in the local Piggly Wiggly.

Written on For Tennessee Valley, Hard Times Didn’t Start with Depression:

I find it interesting that Frank Cagle points to the hiring of his father to cut trees (federal stimulus) and his mother to work in the school cafeteria(federal stimulus) as significant factors for his family having enought to eat during the Great Depression, but now worries about spending federal money for similar programs to help today's young families, families who are struggling in this mess despite whatever fantasy Cagle is living in. This is a prime example of the old "I've got mine, now you get your's the best way you can, but not with my taxes." Really, really weird if you ask me.Frank needs a serious reality check.

Written on Popcorn Sutton, You’ll Be Missed:

Popcorn died a little too soon. If he could've held on till the end of this legislative session he could have avoided the double charge of having liquor and a gun on his premises. He could have packed the gun into the local bar and been legal. I think the resistance to selling wine in grocery stores and the determination to lock up an old moonshiner have a lot in common. It's called hypocrisy.

Written on Wine Debate Spills Over:

Well, I certainly hope I will be allowed to buy wine in the grocery store so I can take it home to drink it where I'm safe. Our state legislators want to make it legal to carry guns in bars, which means home will be the only safe place to tip a glass.

Written on Out of the Club:

The Tennessee GOP has proven that all they care about are power for their party, hot button issues like passing legislation so that people can carry guns in bars, demanding that President Obama present a certified copy of his birth certificate, and other silliness. They seem to be unaware that their constituents are out of work, losing their homes, and worried about public education, healthcare, and a declining infrastructure. The people they are supposed to serve could not care less about who is Speaker of the House. I wish we could recall the whole bunch.

Written on Hallelujah:

I don't blame the National Democrat Party for writing off Tennessee. Tennessee helped elect Bush and Cheney, neither of whom were welcome at the recent GOP Convention because they have become an embarassment. Right wing radicals will continue to prevail in Tennessee even as Gov Palin and her brood reproduce like rabbits while praising abstinece only sex education and creationism in the schools.

Written on Home Economics:

Re Knoxville eateries. I do not live in Knoxville but I recommend King Tut's Egyptian Grill to tourists and intowners alike. Authentic Egyptian food, funky little place. Fun. I also had good tacos and salsa at Senor Taco's. The young people I know all love the Sitar.
My advice to Knoxville is to find out what local places you have that are excellent, unique, serve good food, and have some personality. Every city in the US has fern bars and chains. While you have some chains that are good, like PF Changs and Macaroni Grill, most are the pits. I'll bet you that you have great little neighborhood places all over Knoxville that operate off the radar screen. Send somebody to scope it out. Then figure out a way to feature them in Metropulse.

Written on An Affair to Remember:

Re Tennessee_Values_Authority, I'm not sure who the local figure is that Mr. Cagle is referring to since I don't live in Knoxville. But please, tell us , tell us. Who is the Knoxville rake? If you cannot speak the name, give us a clue. I can only hope it is female. Just once I would like to see a woman at the podium, sobbing, quoting scripture, and expressing remorse for her dalliance with the fine looking young man who charmed her while she was reading the Knoxville City Codes.

Written on An Affair to Remember:

Yes, I can imagine a public figure having an affair while his wife battles illness. Think Newt Gingrich and John McCain. But I must compliment John Edwards, Newt Gingrich, and John McCain. None of them drug out the poor wife while they tearfully confessed. Nor did they claim to find Jesus. Notice that most of these egomaniacs, when caught, usually drag out their wives or Jesus, to cover their butts. Edwards confessed, sans wife or Jesus. I give him a "B." McCain hopes no one will remember his dalliances, and since he can't remember the previous votes he cast in the US Senate, he assumes the rest of can't remember anything either. He gets a "C." And Gingrich apparently gets a pass from the media and the Religious Right since he did it twice. I give Gingrich an "A" for consistency and effectiveness.

Written on Senselessness:

It is interesting to learn what the shooter had been reading --books by Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, and some radio talk nut. Of course, they did not cause the horror but one can only wonder if the O'Reillys and Hannitys of the world are not contributing to an increasing lack of tolerance for our fellow men.
