Written on Grocery Wine Sales Bill Gets Industry Support—and Retailer Criticism:

I think wine should be available in grocery stores, but only wine that is 10% alcohol (20 proof) or less. This would cover most inexpensive boxed wines (Franzia, Almaden, etc.) as well as Lambruscos (such as Riunite) and yet protect the livelihoods of the employees of wine/liquor stores by allowing them to sell the "higher octane" wines (mark-up on distilled liquor is FAR less than mark-up on wine). Frankly, I'm quite surprised that the liquor lobby hasn't introduced this compromise.
