Written on Knoxville’s Oldest Bar:

***just needed to add, the Carousel, after being renamed the Cellar and the upstairs the Attic, did go back to the original name of the Carousel, but I think it was only after the Factory Club closed on Dale Avenue.

Written on Knoxville’s Oldest Bar:

In response to the oldest continual gay bar in Knoxville as being the Carousel, I beg to differ. The Carousel was first owned by a gay man named Chuck Alred, opening in 1975. He lost the bar due to unpaid taxes and the bar was padlocked. After the current owner took over, there were several other "gay" clubs that opened and were very successful in competing for the gay crowd. One was the Factory on Dale Avenue, another later was Trumps in Western Plaza. The Carousel regulars, tired of the same old, same old, rushed to the Factory, causing the Carousel owner to actually close, then RE-OPEN as a hetro-sexual(straight) club called the Cellar, while the upstairs was called the Attic. They were strictly straight and had live music. Sorry, but this is truth, check it out. The Carousel has not always continually been a "gay" club. Thanks for the opportunity to post commment.
