Written on Driving Tennessee's 'White Lightnin’ Trail'—is it the Real Thunder Road?:

Good article! Those interested in driving the Trail can find a helpful "White Lightning" brochure at the Knoxville Tourism & Sports office at 301 S. Gay St., or by visiting:

Regarding the success of the movie "Thunder Road," Bruce Eder of All Movie Guide notes that the movie achieved cult status as it "continued to generate annual five- and six-figure ticket sales from drive-ins for 25 years after release...a factor that caused United Artists...to purposefully delay its release on home video until the end of the 1980s." Film co-star Jim Mitchum (Robert Mitchum's son) says, "It's never been out of release in 50 years. It's shown somewhere all the time. At one time, it had the most play dates of any movie EVER released by United Artists."

The "Thunder Road" stunt driver, Carey Loftin, was arguably the greatest stunt driver ever in Hollywood. He also worked on the Spielberg TV movie "Duel" playing the part of the mysterious truck driver who terrorized Dennis Weaver!
