I would just like to mention that not all "gun toting" preparedness minded people are lone-wolf extreme rightwing commando types. My husband and I own firearms for hunting, target shooting, and yes if it ever comes to that- defense of our family and home. We are both college educated, fairly conservative, but certainly do not fit the picture the main stream media paints of survivalists/preparedness advocates. I know there are some people out there who do- but in my experience- there are more like us. We live in a neighborhood with other people, both work fulltime but don't make a real LOT of money and we worry about bills some months like eveeryone else. We have a mortgage, a 7 year old car, 2 7 year old work trucks, and a 4 year old motorcycle that we use a lot more now since it gets good gas milage. No big screen TV yet but hubby would like one. We have a garden and fruit trees and I can, dehydrate, and freeze the harvest. We butcher and freeze the meat of anything we are successful in huntng. We also enjoy going out to dinner and a movie and having all the "commercial" niceties that most people would want and have many other hobbies.
I would describe our outlook as 'survival minded' as we are always concious of the possibilities and try to be prepared for whatever may happen- storms, recessions, job loss, pandemics, terrorist attacks etc. People who are prepared to deal with those things on their own as much as possible are less of a burden on their neighbors, police, fire, emergency response personnel etc and society in general in the event one of the above should occur. Preparedness is just another type of insurance.

We can take care of ourselves and allow the government to take care of the people who didn't have sense enough, or in my opinion -were to selfish- to take care of themselves.

I do say to all those people- have fun standing in line for 3 hours (or more) waiting for a bottle of water and an MRE from the government you thought could take care of you.- I'll just have some home-canned beef and onions with freeze dried broccoli over some of my stored rice with a glass of my own stored water. In fact, I may have that tonight. I don't have to use any gas to go to the store, I'll just go downstairs to the pantry. A prepared home is really quite convenient.
