"Knoxville could really benefit from a ‘seed library' like Sylva Sprouts that's run by the agricultural extension in Jackson County, N.C., near where I have a vacation cabin. A person can join and ‘borrow' a packet of regionally cultivated seeds by signing a book. The idea is to grow them—I've done sunflowers and spinach-mustard greens—and then save some of the seeds to loan to others the next season. Some of the seeds are heirlooms, or rare, and the growers also share notes and encouragement in the notebook."
