The Weekly Plan-It: May 23-May 29

Highlights of the week ahead

Thursday, May 23

Best of Knoxville 2013 Party

7 p.m., Barley's Taproom & Pizzeria (200 E. Jackson Ave.). Free.

Celebrate the winners of Metro Pulse's annual Best of Knoxville issue—the biggest one ever!—with free music by local bands King Super and the Excellents and Guy Marshall. Plus, stay late for Asheville's the Broadcast,

Friday, May 24

Veterans Benefit Concert

9 p.m., Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1733 (734 North 4th St.) Free, donations accepted.

VFW Post 1733 has been in Knoxville since 1929, but that doesn't mean it's too old to rock. The post is presenting local metal band Steel Eagle for a fund-raiser to benefit veterans and their families. And we love the band names: Johnny Crowbar (lead vocals & bass), Dastardly Jeff Dastardly (drums), Ricky Venom (lead guitar), and Marty Delorean (rhythm guitar). Let's bang heads for the vets!

Saturday, May 25

Hard Knox Roller Girls

6 p.m., Knoxville Civic Auditorium and Coliseum. $10-$12.

Our beloved Hard Knox Roller Girls will be facing off against the New River Valley Roller Girls of Christianburg, Va. We'd like to imply there'll be some slamming action, but we'd better not.

Wednesday, May 29,

Preservation & Libations

5:30-7:30 p.m., Preservation Pub (28 Market Square).

Close out National Preservation Month with Knox Heritage at this social mixer. No need to RSVP, just stop by, have a drink, and enjoy the conversation. Head toward either the smoke-free Speakeasy on the second floor, or the roof deck if the weather's nice.
