The Weekly Plan-It: May 16-May 19

Highlights of the week ahead

Thursday, May 16

Food Access Public Forum

6 p.m.-8 p.m., Pellissippi Community College (1610 East Magnolia Ave.).

The Knoxville Knox County Food Policy Council wants your input on how to improve access to affordable and healthy food. This will be the last in its series of community discussions held in conjunction with the Tennessee Department of Health and the Knox County Health Department. How can obstacles to obtaining fresh food be removed? Well, at this particular meeting at least, you can register ahead of time and receive dinner: 215-5170.

Friday, May 17

Bike to Work Day

7:30 a.m.-8:30 a.m., Market Square.

The Knoxville Regional Bicycle Program is sponsoring this local observance of the national event. Stop by Market Square for some free coffee from Cafe Trio and free biscuits from Pete's Coffee Shop. Special celebrity appearance: Mayor Rogero will present the Best Dressed Commuter awards at 8 a.m.

Saturday, May 18

Old North Knoxville Neighborhood Yard Sale

9 a.m., Old North Knoxville.

Yep, it's the mother of all neighborhood yard sales as Historic Old North Knoxville (roughly, the triangle formed by Central Street, Broadway, and Woodland Avenue) marshals its forces of hipsters and retirees, white collar and blue, to sell stuff. (Please note: It would be appreciated by the editor that any '50s-era jazz LPs be brought to his attention first. Thanks!)

Sunday, May 19

Cars and Coffee

8 a.m.-10 a.m., West Town Mall. Free.

Cars and Coffee is something of a national phenomenon. And it boils down to this: People gather to discuss their cars. Yep, that's it. But these are likely to be cool cars: exotics, classics, tuners. And to be honest, half the fun of owning one of those cars is showing it off. European Auto Garage hosted Knoxville's first Cars and Coffee back in 2008 and it's been growing ever since. This one at West Town is presented by Harper Auto Square, and it should be huge. All makes and models welcome.
