The Weekly Plan-It: Feb. 28-March 6

Highlights of the week ahead

Thursday, Feb. 28

Special Events Community Meeting

9 a.m., Civic Coliseum Ballroom (Third Floor).

So you want to throw a special event? The sort that, say, utilizes city services? Then this is the most perfect meeting for you. Plus: Free parking is available at the Civic Coliseum garage.

Friday, March 1

Tree-Mendous Day

10 a.m., Ijams Nature Center.

This Arbor Day celebration of trees includes a visit from Tennessee Commissioner of Agriculture Julius Johnson, a student presentation by Nature's Way Montessori, and a ceremony for the city's Tree-City and Tree Line USA awards. Kinda makes the whole summer-long living-in-a-rain-forest thing pay off, eh?

Saturday, March 2

6th Annual Mardi Growl

11 a.m.-2 p.m., downtown.

Attention doting dog owners: Here's your opportunity to show off your pooch while also supporting the Young-Williams Animal Center. You can literally parade your canines (in costume!) downtown, starting from the PetSafe Downtown Dog Park. Then celebrate all things dog on Market Square beginning at noon. More info, and early registration for the parade: young-williams.org or call 865-215-6599.

Wednesday, March 6

Knox County Board of Education

5 p.m., City County Building (Large Assembly Room).

We hear that faulty school security systems are a topic of some concern.
