The war on blight continues! At this meeting, appeals are heard on properties cited by the public officer. But non-compliance can mean "the city may repair or demolish, alter, improve, secure, board, or vacate and close the structure and bill the owner for the service." A public officer meeting is also schedule for Friday at 9:30 a.m., same place.

Friday, Aug. 31

2012 Knoxville Overdose Awareness Candlelight Vigil

8 p.m., St. James Episcopal Church (1101 North Broadway). Free.

Drug abuse, from prescription pain-killers to homemade meth, is rampant in East Tennessee. For anyone who has lost friends or family to drug overdoses, this vigil will provide a cathartic way to share memories of loved ones.

Saturday, Sept. 1

East Tennessee Kidney Foundation 6K Fun Run / 2K Walk

8 a.m., Krutch Park Extension. $30.

This first annual fund-raiser starts and ends at Krutch Park, running down Gay Street, across Summitt Hill to Emory Place, then through the Fourth and Gill neighborhood. Visit for more info.

Sunday, Sept. 2

Boomsday 2012

1-10 p.m., Neyland Drive.

The fireworks start at 9:30 p.m., with more than 20,000 shells exploding over the heads of some 400,000 spectators. We admit, you may have trouble finding parking for this one unless you show up early.
