Vol So Hard: The 2014 Vols Mixtape

Once the game gets rolling, Vol players and fans are all about hearing “Rocky Top.” But is that the one and only song players use to prepare for games? Not at all. We decided to let the team (aka #Team118) put together a mixtape of the tunes they’re listening to before the games. (Sometimes players had artists but not specific songs, so we picked out the song for them.)

In the process of making this list, we also learned that offensive lineman Marcus Jackson will literally listen to anything, mostly via Pandora radio, as long as it isn’t classical, so skip the Bach in your pre-game listening. Defensive tackle Jordan Williams was also nice enough to let us know what a huge fan of country music Curt Maggitt is, so we knew to ask. Thought we might be getting punk’d, but it was true!

It’s worth noting that almost every player we talked to mentioned Drake as a favorite. Honorable mentions who just missed the list included Tool, Future, Lil Wayne, Imagine Dragons, Rich Homie Quan, and Starlito. Dillon Bates says he’ll sometimes get pumped to AC/DC, because he used to hear them when his dad played for the Dallas Cowboys.

Another interesting piece of data is that the 2014 Vols have a deficiency in terrifying, bearded lineman, and thus, our playlist has a serious deficiency in terrifying heavy metal. Recruiters, if you’re reading this: more bloodthirsty vikings, plz?

Be warned that much of this list features extreme and violent language, but let’s be honest: These guys are tasked with doing some very extreme and violent stuff. Now, go on this musical journey with Team 118 that we are calling VOL SO HARD—we’ve also made a playlist on Spotify
