TN's Suicides Soar

A Wall Street Journal survey of big states found a severe upswing in suicides between 2007 and 2008, with Tennessee experiencing the highest increase, nearly 16 percent, among the 19 states that had data available for 2008. Because not all state data has been updated, and national data even for 2007 is preliminary, it's hard to precisely rank Tennessee, but the increase is substantial and sad. Here is a sample of some of the states that did have updated statistics:

Suicides By State

State/ 2007/ 2008

TN/ 833/ 965/ 15.8% 10.5

IA/ 331/ 376/ 13.6% 6.7

AL/ 586/ 603/ 2.9% 10.9

OR/ 601/ 552/ -8.1% 11.3

AZ/ 986/ 876/ -11.2% 9.3
