COVER STORY

Like a Country Song
Marie Wilson lives in a small apartment in Powell. She gets around pretty well for a lady going on 86, and some women half a century younger might envy her luminescent blue eyes. They might also envy her memories of certain old pals like Elvis Presley and Hank Williams. The Knoxville native grew up in Fort Sanders and went on to be one of first successful women songwriters in Nashville—in between working on the atom bomb and driving a school bus. It sounds like a made-up tale, but Wilson has the press clippings and the photo albums to prove it's all true. Jack Neely gets the story.
