Public Meeting on Sustainability Incentives Plan

The Knoxville-Knox County Metropolitan Planning Commission has convened a team of developers, local politicians, and residents to explore the idea of providing incentives for new businesses and residential developments that agree to build sustainable projects. According to the exploratory team's presentation, delivered to city and county leaders last week (and available at knoxmpc.org/sdip), requirements for participation in the program could include reduced parking lot sizes, easy access for pedestrians and bikes as well as mass transit, a recycling program, and energy efficient design. In return, MPC could agree to expedite the building permit process, refund MPC fees, and allow for a higher density development than area zoning ordinances call for. This week, the group will be seeking comment on the program at a public meeting.
