Knoxville Filmmaker Aims Camera at Pilots 'N Paws Program

Knox Crowdfunding Project of the Month

Tales in Flight

Last March, we wrote about Pilots 'N Paws, a nationwide organization that coordinates private pilots (including some at Island Home Airport) to provide free transportation for animal rescue/adoption organizations that need to move pets to other states where adoptive homes await. Local filmmaker Michael Samstag would like to make a documentary about the group's efforts to save these animals from "death row" at animal shelters where they remain unadopted. And he's already got some serious documentary chops, having directed War & Truth (a look at embedded journalists in wartime) and Just Got Back (chronicling musicain Darryl Worley's trip to Iraq in 2010), plus some 30 episodes of Backyard Habitat for Animal Planet. He's looking to raise $19,500 at Kickstarter to complete the film. "This is a passion project we are all doing for greatly reduced rates so that we can get the story told—and save more dogs," Samstag writes.
