Whether it's a friend or a pitchman making the recommendation, ultimately we are each responsible for making our own decisions about how we live and eat. Ultimately, we are each responsible for knowing and understanding our many—sometimes too many—options. As far as exploring the possibilities, Knoxville has recently gained a considerable resource. The Glowing Body, nestled just off Central in the burgeoning "DoNo" (Downtown North) neighborhood, offers an impressively wide array of yoga, meditation, massage and nutrition experiences.

Asked if there's a philosophy behind the business, proprietor Hollis Church says, "Yes. Offering folks the opportunity to add practices and foods into their existing lifestyles that will gradually let them create positive change."

Glowing Body's offerings are Church's way of preaching what she practices. You'd never guess it while you're in the hushed environs of one of GB's yoga studios, or its Glowing Bowl café, which specializes in raw and high-energy foods, but Church came to appreciate yoga and raw foods while working in the hectic world of rock-star catering. (Her Knoxville-based company Dega, which she still owns and oversees, has won national acclaim for both its food and success as a business.)

"We have classes seven days a week from a variety of teachers in a variety of styles," says Church. "The studio offers the only yoga ropes wall in Knoxville that is for public use. We also carry a large selection of books, mats, props and some clothing to support a budding or prospering yoga practice."

The idea is that you can try on different instructors, at different times of day, and in different flavors of yoga or Pilates to find the one, or combination, that's right for you. There's Flow, Hatha, Vinyasa, Yinyasa, Power Yoga, and many other varieties from which to choose. Glowing Body also hosts regular "free days," when you can visit and sit in on half-hour-long sample classes to get a feel for all that's available. (The next scheduled "free day" is Sunday, May 17, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

One thing that makes Glowing Body truly unique in Knoxville is its café menu. The Glowing Bowl, tucked into the building's spacious lobby, is the city's first and only eatery specializing in raw foods. The notion is that cooking robs the foods of nutrients, and there are alternative methods of preparation that make the food tasty and digestible while keeping them nutritious.

"In the café," says Church, "we are emphasizing high-energy cuisine that includes raw foods, organic produce, a new line of raw desserts, snacks and crackers made in house. The menu changes soups, salads, and grains weekly. As the weather warms, the café will begin opening in the evenings with light, high-energy small plates and a thoughtful selection of wines and beers."

This spring, Glowing Body kicked off its Round Rug acoustic music series. Keep an eye out for special intimate evening performances by touring and local luminaries.
