The Square Room is accepting applications for its inaugural Sound Off competition, in which local bands will be pitted against each other for a prize package that will include studio time, packaging and pressing of a CD EP, guaranteed radio airplay, and a headlining show at the Market Square club. The contest starts in October and will run one Wednesday a month for five months, with a final showdown in March.
"It's a competition that welcomes everybody from a guy and a guitar to a full band," says Square Room booking director Ben Bannister. "They'll perform two originals and one cover—there'll be a tribute artist each month that the performers will have to play a song by. It'll be judged on audience response and judged criteria, and there will be three guest celebrity judges at each Sound Off."
The development deal prize includes free studio time at Eric Nowinski's Rock Snob studio in North Knoxville to record an EP, package design by Nouveau Graphics, airplay on WUTK 90.3, and a headline CD release show at the Square Room when it's all finished.
