Pistol Creek Catch of the Day: 'Pistol Creek Catch of the Day'

Pistol Creek Catch of the Day

Pistol Creek Catch of the Day

The debut recording from Blount County string band Pistol Creek Catch of the Day captures the group's accomplished musicianship and its silly sense of humor with a collection of old novelty songs ("Smoke That Cigarette") and cornball originals ("Ham and Eggs for Breakfast," "Chinese Buffet," "Elvis Is Hauntin' My Bathroom"). The four members—Bill Cabage, Carl Gombert, Edward Harper, and Scott Hinds—can all play, and show it as the songs here shift from classic honky-tonk and torchy string jazz to rumbling rock 'n' roll. But the tone remains lighthearted throughout; only the cover of Robert Mitchum's moonshine classic "Thunder Road" deviates from the winking mood of the rest of the disc. And then there's the band's enthusiastic version of Beyoncé's "Single Girls (Put a Ring on It)," which demonstrates just how far the Pistol Creekers are willing to go for a laugh: The song is reportedly accompanied, during live performances, by a recreation of Beyoncé's dance routine.
