New Albums on the Way From DownSlave, Standing Small, and the Black Lillies

Several local bands have CD releases scheduled soon, starting with the long-running local thrash metal band DownSlave. Their album Cost of Freedom will be out in time for the band's show at the Valarium on Friday, Aug. 6, with Disarray, Idle Hand, and Devastation Device. The Christian alt-rock band Standing Small has also just announced its new album, Asleep at the Oars, Dreaming of Freedom, will be released in August. The band's third album, Asleep at the Oars will be available free starting Aug. 3 at the band's website.

And the local Americana sweethearts in the Black Lillies have just finished a second recording session for their upcoming album, which singer/guitarist/songwriter Cruz Contreras says could be out in October.

"We went into the studio in February and March, and then two weeks ago we recorded at Riverdale School," Contreras says from Colorado, where the band's in the middle of a three-week Western tour. "It was a live recording, we just got the whole band in one room for Friday and Saturday."

The Lillies released their debut, Whiskey Angel, in the spring of 2009. Contreras says he's still not sure which of the tracks from the two sessions will be put together for the new album—"I prefer the live sound," he says—but that he hopes to have the album mixed and mastered in September.
