Long Time Coming

Long Time Coming

It's not quite Chinese Democracy, but it has been more than 10 years since all four original members of Superdrag recorded an album together. But the original lineup of singer/guitarist John Davis, guitarist Brandon Fisher, bassist Tom Pappas, and drummer Don Coffey Jr. reunited in late 2007 for a successful East Coast club tour (including a two-night stand at Barley's Taproom and Pizzeria in the Old City) and a cover of the 1-900s' "Now" for the WUTK compilation Re-Distilled: 25 Years of Knoxville Rock. They quietly headed back into a Nashville studio in the spring to start work on what members said then might or not turn into a full-fledged comeback record. Those sessions, as well as more in Knoxville and Los Angeles over the summer and early fall, have resulted in the band's fifth studio disc, Industry Giants, set for release on March 17 on the Superdrag Sound Laboratories/Thirty Tigers label. (Superdrag Sound Laboratories also released 4-Track Rock!!! 1992-1995 + Complete "Bender" Sessions, a two-disc collection of demo recordings, in 2007.)

The last record to feature all four original members was 1998's Head Trip in Every Key, the follow-up to the band's full-length debut, Regretfully Yours, which contained the hit single "Sucked Out." Both of those were released on Elektra Records, but Head Trip marked the turning point in Superdrag's relationship with the major label. The sprawling, ambitious, psychedelic arrangements of Head Trip—and the lack of a lead single to follow "Sucked Out"— prompted Elektra to drop the band, and Pappas left soon after. Davis, Fisher, Coffey, and bassist Sam Powers recorded the 2000 follow-up, In the Valley of Dying Stars, on Arena Rock Records, before Fisher also departed, to be replaced by former V-Roys guitarist Mic Harrison for 2002's Last Call for Vitriol. Superdrag announced a long-term hiatus in late 2003 after Davis' well-publicized embrace of Christianity.

"I can't wait to get the record out," Davis says in a press release about the new record. "I can't wait for people to hear it. I wish it could come out tomorrow." (Matthew Everett)
