Local CD Review: Jamie Cook, 'Draft Book 1'

Jamie Cook

Draft Book 1

Jamie Cook isn't making his official solo debut with this short collection of home recordings—the drummer for the Black Lillies has been performing and recording by himself off and on since moving to Knoxville in 1999—but Draft Book 1 is still a notable introduction to Cook as a singer and songwriter. The delicate six-song EP reveals Cook as a more than capable songwriter with a taste for '70s country-rock and moody contemporaries like Bon Iver; the basic home-studio arrangements (Cook on guitar, bass, and drums) could be a risky presentation, but Cook's skills beyond the drum kit cut right through the no-nonsense production.
