Knoxville's burlesque scene gets a big boost on Friday, July 11, when the Edge in West Knoxville hosts the regional round of Burlypicks, an international burlesque and "variety performance arts" competition. Performers from around the Southeast will compete for a chance to go on to the Burlypicks finals in Los Angeles in September.
The event will be hosted by Kisa von Teasa of Salome Cabaret and Burlypicks founder Crystal Swarovski. Out-of-town competitors include Shan de Leers and Ava Dahl from Nashville, Talloolah Love from Atlanta, and Veronika Winters from Lexington, Ky. Knoxville's entrants in the competition are Salome Cabaret's Delinda d'Rabbit, Georgia Sweetjugs, Rosey Lady, and Starry Delight; Suite Soleil from Amused Life Productions; Catalina Mystique from Follies Girls; and independent performer Oliver Love.
More than a dozen Burlypicks regional contests have already been held this spring and summer around the United States and in Europe. The 2013 winner was awarded a trip for two to Jamaica and a cash prize; organizers say this year's first-place prize is "even more grand."
Admission is $10. Doors open at 9 p.m. and the contest starts at 10 p.m.
