Local cabaret pop veterans Hudson K won the most recent round of the Square Room's Sound Off competition on Wednesday, Dec. 2, thanks in part to a strong rendition of Queen's "I Want It All." The band, which now features former Jag Star violinist Erin Tipton, beat out the Dirty Johns, the >HiLites, Cain and Annabelle, and Sounds of Silence. They move on to the final round, set for March 3, against Taylor Brown and Company, Murfreesboro's Vinyl Thief, and two more finalists to be named in January and February.
Hudson K is currently working on its long-awaited debut album at Knoxville's Famous London Recording Studio.
It's also worth noting that the HiLites, who formed out of the ashes of the disassembled Cold Hands this summer, were performing only their second show at Sound Off. Cold Hands guitarist Zach Land, bassist Derek Ashe, and drummer Gene Priest joined with new singer Jacob Parkhurst after the departure of singer Henry Gibson, who joined Royal Bangs earlier this year.
Gibson is opening for the off-kilter Philadelphia pop band Hermit Thrushes tonight at Pilot Light. Admission is $5.
