Barley's Taproom in the Old City will have a little more room for live music in its ground-floor dining room after new renovations are complete in a couple of weeks. The downstairs bar is being moved to the opposite side of the room, and beer kegs will be stored upstairs "to better utilize space," says manager Rodney Lee.
The move will free up about 700 square feet of floor space, Lee says. The bar's seating capacity, currently about 440, will definitely increase, but Lee says he won't know the exact figure until the fire marshal has inspected the room.
The expansion comes just in time for a scheduled concert by country/psych/punk legends the Meat Puppets on Wednesday, Dec. 2. The 1980s band, famous for its ground-breaking 1984 album Meat Puppets II and the 1994 hit "Backwater," played the 763-seat Bijou Theatre when they performed in Knoxville in 2008.
