Apples in Stereo Get a Video Shot in Knoxville

If any of the scenes in the Apples in Stereo's new video for the song "No Vacation" seemed familiar, well, that's because the video, directed by local musician and filmmaker Daniel Coy, was shot at and around Sunspot on the Cumberland Avenue Strip. He used several local actors and non-actors to tell a shaggy dog story about secret surveillance, the indignities of restaurant work, and an actual shaggy dog.

Coy has had music connections to Apples in Stereo founder and songwriter Robert Schneider for several years, and had discussed the possibility of shooting a video for the band even before its most recent album, 2010'sTravellers in Space and Time, which contains "No Vacation."

"His label releases my Lexington band Big Fresh's albums, and my Knox band Deek Hoi shares a member with the Apples," Coy says via e-mail. "I wanted to make a movie about the song rather than for it (so no folks pretending to play and sing, and the song itself doesn't even get a full play). To me the song is about work, so the movie is about work too, and the distractions that take us away from our work."

The notable local personalities involved include Pilot Light owner Jason Boardman, Dirty Knees bassist Elizabeth Wright, guitarist Eric Lee, Metro Pulse contributor Eric Dawson, and MP art director Travis Gray.
