Early Census Results Chart Tennessee Population Growth

What a difference a decade makes: Tennessee's population increased 11.5 percent between 2000 and 2010, according to early Census results released Dec. 21. That makes us the state with the 11th highest increase in population:

April 1, 2010: 6,346,105

April 1, 2000: 5,689,283

Number added: 656,822

State rank by percentage increase: 19

• Based on sheer numbers, Texas had the highest increase in the past 10 years, with 4,293,741 added to its 20,851,820 population in 2000.

• By percentage, Nevada was tops, with 702,294, or 35.1 percent, added to its 2000 population of 1,998,257.

• In last place was Michigan, which actually lost 54,804 of its 2000 population of 9,938,444, or -0.6 percent.

• The 10 states with more 2000-2010 population growth than ours: 1. Texas, 2. California, 3. Florida, 4. Georgia, 5. North Carolina, 6. Arizona, 7. Virginia, 8. Washington, 9. Colorado, 10. Nevada.
