Who's Next for UT Presidency?

It's way too early to be discussing the candidates for University of Tennessee president, since it could theoretically be two years before a new president is named.

Yeah, right.

There is a great deal of sentiment for staying in state, with state Sen. Tim Burchett being the most prominent proponent. (Burchett's late father was once UT dean of students.) There is also support on the Board of Trustees for Jerry Askew, also a former dean of students, now a vice president at Mercy Health Partners.

Burchett has also suggested John Sheridan, a UT Medical Center administrator.

Other internal candidates will surface, as well as people with UT ties, like Askew.

In the meantime, the board has appointed Jan Simek, who says he has no interest in taking the job permanently, as interim president.
