Who Polices Police?

The state Registry of Election Finance makes sure politicians comply with financial disclosures and fill out all the proper paper work. They fine them if they don't. But a recent audit says the members of the registry themselves do not complete an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure form to affirm they are complying with "numerous statutory restrictions."

The Comptroller's office audit also says the Registry lacks a formal complaint policy, has no criteria as to when they do their own investigations, no written policies to ensure staff does its work in a timely, consistent, and equitable manner. The audit says they also do not give adequate notice of meetings.

The audit concludes that there is no documentation to assure the board members for the last four years met all the conflict-of-interest requirements.

Sounds like the Registry ought to investigate.
