Vol fans and local sports writers were puzzled when USA Today put up a database of college football coaches showing UT Coach Butch Jones' compensation at $4.8 million, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in the SEC.
USA Today explained they were adding in the $1.4 million UT paid to buy out Jones' contract from Cincinnati to Jones' $3 million salary and a $500,000 signing bonus.
They argued it is the total amount UT is paying to have Jones as coach this year instead of Derek Dooley.
What they didn't add in, however, is the $1.2 million being paid Dooley to not coach this year. That puts UT's cost to have Jones as coach at $6 million, more than the $5.5 million Alabama is paying Nick Saban.
