The state's First Lady is being credited with discovering a major overcharge to the state.
Gov. Bill Haslam says wife Chrissy asked to look at the utility bills for the executive mansion and questioned why the state was paying $5,000 a month for water. The bills were being sent to the state and automatically paid and no one asked any questions.
Turns out that when former Gov. Phil Bredesen had a major underground renovation done at the mansion, a water line was broken. City water has been leaking since and instead of a monthly bills of about $300 the bills have been as high $5,000 to $6,000 at times.
WSVM-TV Channel 4 in Nashville reports the state has been overcharged $178,000 over the years.
