The old Walmart building on Chapman Highway is being renovated to house the Panasonic operations still located in Knoxville, bringing some much needed daily non-through traffic to South Knoxville businesses hurt by the long closure of the Henley Street Bridge.
Panasonic sold its building at Forks of the River to Fresenius Medical Care, which will spend up to $140 million for the building and a complete renovation. The company says it will result in 665 jobs in the coming years.
Panasonic moved most of its Knoxville production to a plant in Mexico with corporate offices in McAllan, Texas. Only a small portion of the building was needed for the operations that were left.
Walmart moved to a new Super Center store further out Chapman Highway at the John Sevier Highway intersection. The old store is being reconfigured for other uses, besides the Panasonic operations.
