That's Why We Need A Law?

Gov. Bill Haslam testified before Congress in July in support of a federal effort to make Amazon collect state sales taxes from online purchasers.

The Tennessean reports that the Haslam gubernatorial campaign has now paid $434 in sales tax after the newspaper discovered the campaign had not paid the sales tax on some $4,000 in items it purchased on Amazon.

Online purchasers are required to pay state sales tax under existing law, but unless online sellers like Amazon collect it at the point of sale, it is unlikely to ever be collected. Amazon has reached an agreement with the state to start collecting the tax within two years.
