Recovery Act Billboards Come Cheaper in TN

Tennessee may be last in another national category—the amount spent on promotional signs.

ABC News recently did an exposé on millions being spent on signs advertising projects as being paid for by the federal stimulus package, citing instances where the signs cost up to $10,000 each (a 10' by 11' sign at Dulles Airport). Illinois has 950 signs at $665,000, for example.

The government says $5 million has been spent on signs, but a congressman told ABC News it's more like $20 million.

The story revealed that Tennessee also has signs labeling projects as "Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act." But the Tennessee signs cost $37.67 each, or a total of $12,931 for 324 signs.
