An Opponent for Brooks?

Knox County Commissioner Dave Wright is no longer saying he will not run against state Rep. Harry Brooks, R-Knoxville, in the Republican primary. He will only say he has until April 3, the qualifying deadline, to make a decision.

Wright's major issue is getting a new middle school for Gibbs, in his district, and he wants Brooks, as chair of the House Education Committee, to use his clout to get that school and a middle school for Hardin Valley on the school board's capital plan for next year. Brooks and Wright's districts overlap in East Knox County.

Brooks has been a leader in Gov. Bill Haslam's education reforms as chair of the education committee and has drawn fire from opponents of Common Core, a new curriculum and testing program for the state's schools. A group opposed to Common Core is said to be looking for an opponent for Brooks. Wright says he has been urged to run but has not been contacted by anyone out of the county about getting into the race.
