Senior management of Norfolk Southern Railroad will hold a community meeting at 5 p.m. today (Thursday) at Jefferson Middle School in Jefferson City. They will make a presentation on the company's proposed inter-modal facility in New Market, which will put tractor trailers on railroad cars for cross-country transshipment.
The proposed 1,300-acre facility has drawn bitter opposition from New Market residents because it involves turning farmland adjacent to New Market Elementary School into a giant industrial park. Residents have argued the facility should be at an existing industrial park.
Meanwhile, some New Market residents opposed to the site are looking into a report that some Jefferson County Commissioners signed a confidentiality agreement and traveled to a Norfolk Southern inter-modal facility in Virginia. Did they violate the Sunshine law?
