Knox County Commission is expected to discuss a censure motion at its April meeting against Commissioner Greg "Lumpy" Lambert because of an altercation he had with a spectator in a zoning case last week. The move is at the instigation of Commissioner Richard Briggs.
Lambert argues that there are no grounds for censure; he said he told an opponent of the rezoning that holding up the elderly property owner from settling his affairs before heart surgery was wrong and that "he ought to be ashamed of himself."
Lambert says Briggs is pursuing the matter to score political points with people who don't like Lambert and aid Briggs' mayoral race. Or possibly because he perceives Lambert to be a supporter of former Sheriff Tim Hutchison or state Sen. Tim Burchett for the job, Lambert said.
But the most significant result of this tempest in a teapot is the News Sentinel reporting, in response to the Lambert theory, which Briggs has said he "probably won't run for mayor because he doesn't want to give up his position as a heart surgeon." A statement which at least five other possible mayoral candidates read with considerable interest. Not to mention Briggs' campaign staff.
