Well-meaning parents thought it would be great if the state champion Fulton High School football team got to march in the Santa Claus Christmas Parade, sponsored by WIVK, last Friday night, and took to social media to try and drum up support.
There ensued a series of miscommunications and angry e-mails. Yes, the deadline for parade entries had passed, but no one wanted to dis the Falcons. Turns out the football coaches were scheduled to work the basketball game that night between Fulton and Austin-East—the school's biggest rival—and some of the football players wanted to go as well.
Mayor Madeline Rogero chastised Councilman Nick Della Volpe in an e-mail for jumping the gun and causing a lot of controversy and straining relations between the city and a major media presence. Della Volpe replied that he contacted the radio station and was responding to his constituents, who had said the team was being excluded from the parade. The parade is not sponsored by the city, but by WIVK. The station invited any players that wanted to march with the Fulton band.
A separate parade is planned especially to honor the state champs. It will be along Broadway after the holidays.
