House Speaker Pro Tem Judd Matheny has backed off his earlier plan to challenge House Speaker Beth Harwell for her job. Colleagues say Matheny may have realized that his plan might not sit well with some Republicans and Matheny is involved in a re-election campaign.
Those upset Republicans also include large political contributors who really, really like Harwell, a former chair of the state Republican Party and who represents a Nashville district where many of them live.
Matheny now says he is just going to try and be a better Pro Tem.
That assumes he will win the post next time and whether his colleagues are upset about his criticism of Harwell and Gov. Bill Haslam. And it assumes he will beat his Democratic opponent.
