Some time back Tennova started looking around for a place to build a new hospital. At the same time, the owners of Knoxville Center had let it be known that the mall was for sale.
A proposal was floated to convert Knoxville Center into a hospital—it has parking, an interstate exit, and an additional undeveloped 30 acres as part of the property.
It sort of made sense. Tennova has a hospital that everyone but its owners calls St. Mary's and the mall is what everybody but its owners calls East Town.
But the proposal didn't get very far. The doctors wanted to move west and Tennova got an option on property on Middlebrook Pike. The owners of Knoxville Center have launched an upgrade of the mall, soliciting new tenants and investing more money to make it a success.
