Gov. Bill Haslam went 0 for 2 in the election. He chose to support two incumbents in the Republican primary. State Rep. Debra Maggart (see above) was defeated. Haslam also campaigned hard for Sevier County veteran legislator Richard Montgomery, who Haslam dubbed as his go-to guy on education reform.
Despite spending over $300,000 and having the governor campaign for him, House Education Committee Chair Montgomery lost his Sevier County seat.
Montgomery ran on his record of education reform and Haslam praised him as his ally who led education reform in the House. Perhaps teachers in Sevier County were not as enamored with education reform, which toughened tenure requirements.
Dale Carr, who won the seat, is an auctioneer.
