Knoxville City Councilman Steve Hall is forcing his colleagues to a vote on the guns-in-parks ordinance, though it has been put off for several weeks, ostensibly to have a public hearing. Mayor Bill Haslam would be happy if the issue went away; he doesn't need a controversial issue on council in the midst of his race for governor. Haslam has avoided taking a position on the issue. His parks and recreation director favors a ban and brought it to council originally.
It will be passing strange if the issue comes up for a vote on council and Haslam does not argue one way or the other. His opponents in the gubernatorial race are no doubt enjoying his discomfiture and will be looking forward to the time it comes up for a vote.
