Gloria Johnson Enters 6th District Race

The state Senate race will no longer be over on Sept. 27 when the primary is held pitting Republicans Marilyn Roddy, Becky Duncan Massey, and Victoria DeFreese against each other. That's because Democratic Party Chair Gloria Johnson announced at the party's Truman Day Dinner that she will be running for the Democrats. That will pit her against the winner of the Republican primary in the general election Nov. 8.

State Sen. Lowe Finney, the Senate Democratic Caucus Chair, has been looking for a prominent Democrat to prevent the Republicans having a free ride to the seat being given up by the retiring state Sen. Jamie Woodson. The district is Republican, but the election will be held on the same day as the city of Knoxville mayoral general election and more Democrats than normal may be voting, though most of the senate district is outside the city.
