It Could Happen

After the holidays, Hammond plans to call a meeting with representatives from Charter, Knology and Comcast to discuss the matter. Seems the cable companies have been operating on a month-to-month basis and convincing the Commission not to require a long-term contract. They have convinced the locals there is legislation pending in Nashville to set up statewide regulation to replace the county-by-county system now in place.

Let’s see. Legislators will vote for a plan to take away local control of cable operations from 95 local governments and vest it in a state agency? As Rita Rudner might say: “It could happen.”

Stacked Snack

In a party scene in last week’s episode, Keith’s character, a Southern boy named Yonk Allen , made sure the refreshments included a “Tennessee Stack Cake,” and the young wife complains of having to eat half of it. A stack cake is an eight-layer cake, with cooked dried apples between the layers and whipped cream on top. But then, if you’ve been to Pigeon Forge, you knew that.

Keith, a Knoxville native and UT theater grad, grabbed two Golden Globes for the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman and has done a variety of television and movie work since. Most recently he appeared in U-571 , Men of Honor and Behind Enemy Lines .

Senate Scenarios

Republicans and Democrats might have tried to run state Sen. Randy McNally for speaker and lieutenant governor because of the impasse between Wilder and Republican leader Ron Ramsey . But that didn’t fly.

Wilder may just get Republican state Sen. Mike Williams to abstain. If no one gets a majority, the current guy (Wilder) just stays in office for the next two years. Maybe.

Wilder has told Republicans he will give all the committee chairs to Democrats if they vote for Ramsey. Maybe a half dozen will abstain, Williams doesn’t get left all alone and the abstainers get committee chairs. Maybe.

The Democrats, worried about Wilder’s continued leadership, may get Republican votes and join together to elect state Sen. Joe Haynes , a Nashville Democrat, to replace Wilder. Haynes announced this week he is a candidate for the post, offering a new bipartisan vision for the future.

Or, in a collective scream of frustration, the senate could re-elect Wilder by acclamation. Republicans are frustrated by Ramsey’s inability to out maneuver Wilder.

We were pretty impressed.

Mauro’s Back

Mauro’s first books, Gay Street (a book of short stories which including some vivid vignettes about downtown Knoxville during Christmastime), Enola’s Wedding , and Spite Hall , are all set in contemporary Knoxville; he tells complex and often funny stories of interrelationships, some of which seem roman a clefs on Knoxville society. Though none of them were big sellers, on a national basis, they were all good reads in a surprisingly old-fashioned, almost Dickens ian style. He was an occasional contributor to Metro Pulse . Mauro has since earned more of a reputation as a journalist, with a deal with Simon & Schuster for a nonfiction book about Internet dating, due out next year.

After three years in Hartford, he has moved back, he says, because Knoxville seems like home. He’s not sure what to make of the recent development. An aficionado of melancholy, he liked downtown fine when it was a little bleaker.
