Out-of-state commenters were puzzled about state Sen. Stacey Campfield being thrown out of a restaurant on "Gay Street" because of his hurtful and wrong comments about gays and AIDS. Not being aware of the long history of the city's main street and the Bistro restaurant thereon.
Back in the early 1980s, when the word "gay" was entering the mainstream as a term for homosexual, there was a move among the local business community to rename Knoxville's principle artery. The move was stillborn generally due to Jim Dykes, a columnist at the old daily Knoxville Journal. Dykes' scathing ridicule of the idiocy of renaming a Knoxville landmark resulted in it never being brought up again. It was just one of the reasons that Dykes was recently mourned at his passing.
