Developer Drops Out of New Market Business Park

The developer who planned an industrial park next to a proposed intermodal railroad facility in New Market has dropped out, but Jefferson County is considering stepping in to buy property and create a county industrial park.

Norfolk Southern wants to build a transfer switch yard in which trucks can be loaded onto rail cars, or off-loaded from other sites and put back on the road. The county industrial development board is considering three sites around the county, including a Jefferson City site formerly developed by Magnavox, for an industrial park.

Norfolk Southern has identified farmland in New Market as the preferred site for the intermodal facility, which has drawn opposition from local farmers and environmental groups. Taking Class A farmland and locating the facility almost 15 miles from the interstate are the main arguments against it. The site is also alongside New Market Elementary School.

The county is holding public hearings to discuss the pros and cons of each site.
