Knoxville Civil Rights pioneer Margaret Gaiter has contacted members of Knoxville City Council suggesting they have a chance to make history with their pick of an interim mayor.
Gaiter's message is that Council has a "chance to make history and say to our community and country that Knoxville is a city of opportunity for all its residents. Vote for Dan Brown."
Brown is an African-American councilman who represents East Knoxville and would be the first African-American mayor of Knoxville.
When Mayor Bill Haslam resigns in January to become governor, City Council will pick one of its own to serve as interim mayor until the next mayor is elected in the fall of 2011.
