Could TVA Get Environmentalist on Its Board?

Could it finally be time for TVA to have a committed environmentalist on its board? The agency has taken enough criticism from environmental groups over the years and the ash spill in Kingston has further damaged the utility's environmental reputation.

John Noel is a Nashville businessman with impeccable environmental credentials. He got a Lifetime Conservation Achievement Award from Gov. Phil Bredesen and after he saved some ancient White Oak trees in Hickman County; the Bon Aqua Woods were renamed in his honor as a state nature area.

The Tennessean reports that Noel is on a list of candidates for the board who have had preliminary talks with the White House. The list also includes Bob Tuke, state Rep. Mike McDonald, and Barbara Haskew, economics professor at MTSU and former TVA employee.

President Obama is expected to name four members to the board this year. There are two vacancies now and two more terms will soon expire.
