Campfield Competitor Now In District

Knox County Commissioner Richard Briggs has long been the favorite of the Knoxville establishment to oust and replace state Sen. Stacey Campfield, the Knox County Republican who is nationally known for his outrageous statements about AIDS, his blog, and his "Don't Say Gay" bill.

But there were two impediments to Briggs running for the state Senate.

He didn't live in the district. But he has now closed on a house in Farragut, which is in the district. The other problem is a distinguished heart surgeon taking off several months to go to Nashville to serve in the Legislature. But the election is in two years and Briggs could retire from his practice by then, or cut back to fewer hours.
