City Council Budget Hearings

On May 1, Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam presented his proposed city budget for 2009-2010. Despite the current economic situation, the conservative budget proposal—reduced $14 million from last year ($3 million from the general fund)—includes no recommended layoffs and a salary increase for all city employees, and $27 million in capital and infrastructure improvements, all without a tax hike. Next week, the City Council will have its first opportunity to make its assessment and recommendations for the budget.
