The Central Business Improvement District's Big Plans

On Monday, Nov. 23, the board of directors of the Central Business Improvement District—whose "Big Hairy Audacious Goal," or B-HAG, is to make downtown Knoxville the most vibrant downtown in the Southeast—will meet to discuss the draft of its strategic plan. That plan's available now at the CBID's website ( and will serve as a road map for the next three years, laying out the major challenges and goals for Gay Street, Market Square, and the Old City.

CBID's goals certainly are audacious. By the end of 2012, it hopes to add 25 new non-restaurant retailers and grow the downtown workforce by 10 percent over the current level of 22,500.

Monday is residents' chance to push for a new direction or cheer on the current one, so study up and bring your notes. It begins at 11:30 a.m. and takes place at CBID's offices, 17 Market Square.
